For Giselle Melendez, 25, of Freeport, N.Y., caring in the nursing field extends beyond her patients. She offers her experience and insight to student nurses who are preparing to enter the field of nursing. Inspired by an aunt, who worked as a nurse for 30 years, Giselle decided in the seventh grade that nursing was to be her profession. While going through college, Giselle became involved in the Nursing Students Association. She ran for state office as a junior and was appointed president in her senior year, because no one else wanted the job. For Giselle, that was a sign that the group needed a push. She worked with the other board members to create projects and activities to ignite the NYNSNA. It worked. The group showed an 80 percent increase in membership the following year. Now a professional in Montefiore's pediatric ER, Giselle still keeps in touch with the NSNA as a consultant, continually offering inspiration, energy and advice for those following in her footsteps.
"What really did it for me was being at the national convention and seeing the enthusiasm from all the people from around the country. It's the idea that we're all going to make a difference and we're going out there to touch lives," Giselle said. "It's not just bedside care."
