Name: Cheryl Schmidt
Profession: Associate Professor
Location: Arkansas
As an Associate Professor at the College of Nursing at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Cheryl Schmidt has the opportunities to touch thousands of lives - not only those of students, but those of her colleagues and others she'll never know. In the two weeks after Hurricane Katrina, she trained 181 doctors and nurses to work in Red Cross shelters across the disaster area. She also travels across Arkansas state teaching nurses to prepare for bioterrorism and chemical attacks.
In addition, she and her husband helped start a church-supported health clinic in her home town of Benton, which provides free health care for those in financial need.
Her heavy involvement with the National Student Nurses Association also allows her to mentor students and work as a role model for those entering the nursing field. Her diligence and positive attitude make her one of a kind. "I'll stay teaching until I get worn out. I love it so much!"
In addition to her academic work, Schmidt served in the U.S. Army as assistant Chief Nurse in 350th Evacuation Hospital; staff nurse, team leader, and charge nurse on acute pediatric unit at Walter Reed AMC.
With more than 10 years of nursing school, more than 30 years of professional experience and a vast array of honors, committees and community service Cheryl Schmidt embodies the spirit of caring.
